Designed to protect from rain and wind, these covers dramatically increase concentrations of off-gassed chemicals by eliminating ventilation. PVC rain covers contain 20-40% phthalate plasticizers (primarily DEHP and DINP) that off-gas continuously — accelerated by body heat from the infant and parent. The sealed space also traps CO2 from infant breathing, FR off-gas from the stroller itself, and condensation that re-deposits chemicals on all interior surfaces. Even brief use (30-60 minutes) creates measurably elevated chemical exposure.
