The vinyl (PVC) mattress cover is in direct contact with infant skin and face during sleep, releasing phthalate plasticizers and vinyl chloride monomer. The FR-treated foam beneath off-gases TDCPP and other organophosphate FRs through the vinyl barrier. The enclosed mesh sides of pack-n-plays trap off-gassed chemicals, creating higher concentrations in the infant's breathing zone than open-air cribs.
